Heavy Plate Mill
The ever-increasing requirements in the area of heavy plate production are pushing existing plants to their limits. In order to keep pace with technical progress, voestalpine Grobblech GmbH has decided to replace its heavy plate mill.
High forming capacity, the most modern planarity and flatness control elements and a rolling force of 8,000 tons were required. The mill housings optimised by FE analysis were designed as one piece. It is remarkable that a roll gap opening of 660 mm has been achieved despite integrated bending and roll displacement. The bending cylinders are fixed in the frame. Due to the large displacement path, the profile of the roll grinding can be minimal. The fitting line of the framework is adjustable via the stepped and wedge plate.
The new drive train combines the technology of cardan shafts and gear type spindles and is the world's strongest in this area. In order to keep downtimes as short as possible, the drive train and the mill roller tables were replaced at an initial standstill. The new heavy plate mill was pre-assembled and tested in parallel. It was then transported to its place, assembled and put into operation in a record time of 31 days.
